THREE MORE YEARS! Paddy Signs Up For More

Paddy McCarthy has today signed a contract extension with us, taking him up to 2015.

Having made 143 appearances in all competitions since joining the club in June of 2008, McCarthy has established himself as a firm fans favourite thanks to his full-blooded performances at the heart of our defence.

Taking ownership of the captains’ armband following the departure of Shaun Derry in the summer of 2010, Paddy has adapted into his role as the leader of the team with aplomb. Having been a part of the squad that survived administration, he knows what the club means to the fans and isn’t afraid to show it.

Whether it be venturing to a pub with the fans following last season’s Player of the Year award ceremony and belting out an impromptu version of the Elvis Presley classic Suspicious Minds on the karaoke machine, or stamping his feet like a distraught toddler whenever we concede a goal, Paddy has got a special place in heart for us and always will have.

With his new contract tying him to us until he reaches the grand old age of 32, I’d say there’s a very good chance he will see the rest of his career out in SE25 and that is no bad thing. With the likes of Sean Scannell and Darren Ambrose leaving the club in recent weeks, there has undoubtedly been a feeling amongst supporters that times were changing drastically but in McCarthy, fans still have a genuine figurehead to remind them of the achievements in our not too distant past.

Paddy went into administration with us and survived to tell the tale, it’s good to know that the next generation of players will have a captain who can remind them of that as and when the occasion calls for it.
